"At least in the enneagram literature that has been published so far, distortions of Christian belief are common, even in the books that are most popular among Catholics and that are sometimes written by members of religious orders¡K¡Ktheir writings nevertheless often distort Christian beliefs in a way that makes them conform to enneagram doctrine. For example, in enneagram teaching sin is often redefined in terms of the characteristic limitations of a particular personality type¡K¡Kevery personality type has its intrinsic limitations, sin becomes something at least in part inevitable¡K¡K¡KIf sin is the (inevitable) result of one personality type, then the solution to sin is to be found primarily in compensating for one personality type by following the prescriptions of enneagram teaching. The remedy for sin becomes first of all a matter of greater knowledge rather than reform of the will. ¡K¡KEnneagram teaching thus obscures the Christian understanding of sin¡K¡Kwhen contemporary enneagram teachers attempt to relate the enneagram to Christianity and Christian ideas are added to the mixture, a clear sense of the fundamental priority of Christian beliefs is easily lost."

The eneagram may be euristically interesting, and a good way to realize of your qualities and shortcomings. But still is it not the best choice as an instrument for the evaluation of personality. This is also my opinion. But this opinion is supported by the fact that the eneagram does not even appear in the manuals of personality assessment and evaluation. From this you can conclude that this kind of method of self-discovery -the eneagram- is out of the scientific psychological mainstream. I think that the eneagram oversimplifies the complexity of personality. Typologies may be useful, but there are typologies even more useful and scientifically sounder that the eneagram (like the types of Sheldon). The eneagram, because it is a labeling instrument, certainly neglects something very important: on one hand the psychodynamics of the individual, and his developmental processes on the other.

'Gnosticism never completely abandoned the realm of Christianity. Instead, it has always existed side by side with Christianity, sometimes taking the shape of a philosophical movement, but more often assuming the characteristics of a religion or a para-religion in distinct, if not declared, conflict with all that is essentially Christian. An example of this can be seen in the Enneagram, the nine-type tool for character analysis, which when used as a means of spiritual growth introduces an ambiguity in the doctrine and the life of the Christian faith.'

¬ü°êSecretariat for Doctrine and Pastoral Practices/Fr. J. Di Noia¤å¥óªºµ²½×¥ç»¡©ú

"those who are looking for an aid for personal and psychological development should be aware that enneagram teaching lacks a scientific foundation for its assertions and that the enneagram is of questionable value as a scientific tool for the understanding of human psychology. Moreover, Christians who are looking for an aid for spiritual growth should be aware that the enneagram has its origins in a non-Christian worldview and remains connected to a complex of philosophical and religious ideas that do not accord with Christian belief."

One nun was told by another nun: "What you need to do because you're a number 2 on the Enneagram, is move out of your convent, get yourself a new apartment and buy a cat, and learn to become creatively self-centred." Why? Because each one of these Enneagram numbers also has its own totem animal, and the totem of a 2 is a cat. You know, I don't remember that part of the sermon on the Mount, where Our Lord told us to be creatively self-centred, or uncreatively self-centred? This is nonsense.

The other one by a Benedictine from Chicago, has a book on how to 'type' the people, and she has another book on spiritual direction. In her book on spiritual direction Jesus Christ is mentioned once in the whole book! God is mentioned 7 times in the whole book! Now what is she directing these people towards? One of the examples she uses has a woman who says: "Well, Michael and I began to act out sexually, and at first I felt this guilt. But I realised God doesn't give me this guilt God just loves us so unconditionally. It's the guilt I feel because my mother would not approve, and so I had to learn to overcome my mother's lack of approval." The nun who wrote the book never commented. She was happy the woman came to 'enlightenment'. This is part of the perversity of the Enneagram.

Holy See Commission Readies Guidelines on "New Age"

Vatican and World Experts Meet in Rome

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 14, 2004 (Zenit.org).- The Holy See is studying the answers given by local Churches in regard to New Age and is preparing a document of guidelines for bishops on the subject.

The International Consultation on New Age, being held in Rome, was convoked by a commission of various Vatican bodies on "Sects and New Religious Movements," a Vatican press statement reports.

Members of the commission include representatives of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, of the pontifical councils for Promoting Christian Unity, for Culture, and for Interreligious Dialogue.

The study is a follow-up to the February 2003 publication of a provisional report entitled "Jesus Christ the Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian Reflection on the 'New Age.'"

That text explained that the "New Age is not, properly speaking, a religion, but it is interested in what is called 'divine.' The essence of New Age is the loose association of the various activities, ideas and people that might validly attract the term."

The statement reveals that preparation for the meeting was based on the answers of the episcopal conferences to a questionnaire sent to them when that document was presented.

In addition to the representatives of the four Vatican organizations, some 20 experts, selected by episcopal conferences worldwide, are attending the three-day meeting that ends Wednesday.

The meeting is addressing two issues that are particularly worrying to the experts, the statement clarifies: The two are the "discernment of the psychological techniques promoted by the New Age, and a profound comparison between the New Age's answers and those offered by Christian spirituality."

Finally, Vatican sources revealed that the meeting seeks to "present some pointers for pastoral reflection on the New Age as a proposal for the episcopate."

The last plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for Culture, held in Rome from March 11-13, indirectly addressed the issue of reflection on the present "challenge of unbelief and of religious indifference."

CONSULTATION ON "NEW AGE" UNDERWAY IN VATICAN

VATICAN CITY, JUN 15, 2004 (VIS) - A three-day international consultation on the "New Age" began yesterday in the Vatican, promoted by the Interdicasterial Commission for Reflection on "Sects and New Religious Movements" as a follow-up to the February 3, 2003 provisional document entitled "Jesus Christ Bearer of Living Water, A Christian Reflection on the 'New Age'." This document was prepared by the Pontifical Councils for Culture and for Inter-religious Dialogue.

The consultation now underway includes members of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Pontifical Councils for Promoting Christian Unity, for Culture and for Inter-religious Dialogue. This meeting was prepared on the basis of answers received from episcopal conferences to a questionnaire sent to them about the 2003 document. Joining the members of the Vatican dicasteries are an estimated 20 experts chosen by Episcopal conferences from diverse geographical areas who have shown a great interest in this subject.

The program includes the presentation of a synthesis of the answers that came from local Churches and reflections on two aspects that emerged which are considered worthy of attention: the discernment about and psychological techniques promoted by the 'New Age' and a deeper study between 'New Age' proposals and Christian spirituality. In conclusion, participants will try to suggest some ideas for a pastoral reflection on the "New Age" for episcopacies.
